Decrease In Enrollees Concerns Palau Education Ministry KOROR, Palau (Island Times) – Palau’s Ministry of Education (MOE) expresses concern on the continuing decrease in the number of enrollees every year. During the 19th Annual Education Convention last week, Division of School Management Chief Sinton Soalablai disclosed in his report that there has been a 4.9% decrease of enrollees in all grade levels every year and from 2009 to 2013 there has been a total of 18% decrease. "We are wondering where these kids are going. If the family decided to move off island, it would have not been that big as the numbers that we gathered. For school year 2013-2014, we are predicting a 3 to 5% decrease in the number of students that will not enroll, this is very alarming," Soalablai said. For school year 2012 to 2013, there had been a total of 3,375 students who enrolled (2,404 students went to public schools and 971 went to private schools). Of that number 2,220 are elementary students (1,730 went to public elementary schools and 490 went to private elementary schools). For the high school, there was a total of 1,153 students who enrolled (672 went to public high schools and 481 went to private high schools). He added that Palau has a total of 24 schools (17 public schools and 7 private schools). In that total number, there are 18 elementary schools (16 public elementary schools and 2 private elementary schools). There are 6 high schools (1 public high school and 5 private high schools). Solablai said that the MOE together with other agencies such as the Palau Community College, Ministry of Health, Palau Head Start Program, Belau Employees and Educators Alliance and Belau Family, School and Community Association are working together to strengthen their partnership to maximize student educational success by sharing information about current activities and areas of collaboration.
