"Dedicated to the proposition that all men (and women) are created equal... we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain...government of the people and by the people shall not perish." - - - Abraham Lincoln, Thursday November 19, 1863 Today, we find ourselves in another great battle, of opposites, to reaffirm whether those who died on the battlefield at Gettysburg, and the battlefields in Europe, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East "shall not have died in vain." Lincoln reiterated the principles of human equality. He proclaimed the Civil War as a struggle for the preservation of the Union with "a new birth of freedom, that would bring true equality to all ,not just some, of its citizens. Lincoln defined the Civil War as a struggle not just for the American Union, but for the principle of human equality for all mankind everywhere. "Man was born for society. However, little he may be attached to it, he never can wholly forget it, disgusted at the guilt or absurdity of Mankind, hate inflames his bosom. When his passions cool; when time has mellowed his sorrows, and healed those wounds, his heart becomes the prey of Ennui and weariness. He looks round, and finds himself alone in the Universe. The love of society revives in his bosom, and he pants to return to the world which he has abandoned." ~ ~ Matthew Gregory Lewis
