Dedza head-on collision claims 7 lives Dedza, December 30: Seven people died while six others sustained serious injuries after a bus they were travelling in crashed with a Mozambican freight truck in Dedza in the early hours of Monday. Spokesperson for Dedza police, Sergeant Edward Kabango, said six of the deceased died on the spot while another died at the Dedza District Hospital where he was rushed for treatment alongside six other casualties. Kabango said the bus was travelling to Lilongwe from Blantyre while the heavy goods truck was going in the opposite direction. “The accident took place at Dedza Girls Islamic Secondary School along the M1 road. It happened because the freightliner had diverted into the lane of the bus,” he said. The accident happened around 4 a.m. He said the driver of the bus, identified as Constance Nkhata, who was aged 37 and hailed from Malili Village in Traditional Authority Kayembe in Dowa, was among the deceased. The driver of the truck, Gabriel Kalemba, survived with serious injuries. Police have not yet decided whether Kalemba would have a case to answer or not, said Kabango. “Currently, our priority is that he should get medical help. After he gets well, we will get his side of the story and determine whether to charge him or not,” he said. Pictures by Gospel Mwalwanda
