Dee & Eugene Update. I originally posted their situation in March 2012 and there was a successful match and placement. The original posting referenced the couple having a 2 1/2 year old that was the subject of a DCF open case. It was not contemplated at that time that the 2.5 year old was available for adoption. Well, what was supposed to the start to a quiet week began with a call from Dee and Eugene to see if the couple from 2102 would be interested in adopting the now almost three year old. When I called the adoptive mom, there was about a nano-second response time. They made some calls to finalize the updating of their home study and I called in an independent mental health counselor to meet with Dee and Eugene. After their session, it was determined that they were able to make this very difficult decision and they executed the necessary consent/surrender paperwork before a court reporter. In Florida, because the child is older than 6 months of age, Dee and Eugene have three business days to change their minds. This being Thanksgiving, they have until Friday at about 3:15 to reconsider. The adoptive parents are now on a flight to Jacksonville to meet first thing in the morning to start the process. Paramount concern: how a three year old will handle the transition, if this goes forward. The counselor had some suggestions but ultimately, it is a step by step/day by day process. Also, you always have to be aware of adopting out of birth order, but in this case the siblings are full biological siblings, so I am not sure if the birth order issue is as critical, especially since one is just now 18 months and the other is just now three years old. I will update as this moves along. It is horribly difficult to see parents make this decision as to their 3 year old but they stated over and over that they want what is best for her. Yet another case where the family having home study in the works was a good idea and enables them to be here on a moments notice. MRM
