Deep Sea Robotics The photo on the left shows an American Remora 6000 Robotic Submarine recovering the Flight Data Recorder from Air France 447 in 12,795 feet of water, on or around 1 May 2011. This would be an equivalent depth of water in which we might expect to find MH370 if it did fall into the South Indian Ocean. To get a feel for this... that would be equivalent to climbing or descending 10 Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other. The Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in the Earths seabed hydrosphere, with a depth of 35,814 ft. It is located at the southern end of the Mariana Trench near the Mariana Islands group. On 23 January 1960, the Swiss-designed bathyscaphe Trieste, originally built in Italy and acquired by the U.S. Navy, descended to the ocean floor in the trench manned by Jacques Piccard and USN Lieutenant Don Walsh. On 26 March 2012, Canadian film director James Cameron made a solo manned descent in the DSV Deepsea Challenger to the bottom of the Challenger Deep.
