Deep in the Shibuya area, Tokyo for my birthday last year, I found by chance a little record shop away from the main drag and along a small hill. The shop was full of back to back hip hop classics and I saw in the racks an early Futura 2000 single from 1982. Futura is now one of my favourite painters and was then masquerading as a rapper. Backing band on the single were one of my favourite bands The Clash. 1982 is significant, Futura 2000, fellow artist Dondi, the godfather of hip hop Afrika Bambaata, and the Rock Steady Crew toured Paris and laid the seeds for the French hip hop movement. I played the Futura 2000 single at the launch for The Secret List - Los Angeles in Hanoi earlier this year. It was a great party. I would never begin to compare myself to the esteemed New York touring party who played Paris but hopefully the spirit of the 1982 tour will live on between 6pm-8pm 10 December at Superfly Records, 53 rue Notre Dame de Nazareth, Paris for the launch of The Secret List - Paris. There will be a book signing, question and answer session and I will play some records.
