Deep thoughts: Distinguishing atheists, agnostics, deists, - TopicsExpress

Deep thoughts: Distinguishing atheists, agnostics, deists, pantheists, and pantheists, etc. from those who believe literally that they are created in Gods image, that God intervenes in their lives, that certain manifestations of God offer salvation, that there is a better afterlife with God, and so on...what motivates the latters to believe what they do--that humans on this small planet orbiting a third rate star on the outer edges of a mediocre galaxy have the constant attention of a sentient creator of all that is? I dont believe it is any real fear of hellfire and damnation, or that they are simply egotistical in their beliefs. My own academic research would say that it is the difference between concrete operational thought and formal operational thought (i.e. critical thinking), but I know many people who fall into the latter category and still believe these things. This is a question that I struggle more and more with, and would enjoy hearing others thoughts.
