Defence 2014: a year on camera On the beaches: On 6 June 1944, Allied troops began what would be the largest amphibious invasion ever launched. 70 years later veterans, their families and friends, and world leaders came to commemorate an event crucial to the liberation of Europe. As part of D-Day 70 celebrations 138 Royal Marines, Royal Navy and Royal Netherlands Marine Corps showed their amphibious skills on Southsea beach.
