Defence lawyers in ATL case call press conference Defence lawyers in the just concluded ATL pension fraud trial are to hold a press conference today. It comes a day after Senior Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly Williams upheld a no-case submission setting free three former ATL executives who were charged with fraud. Patrick Lynch, former chairman of the ATL pension scheme, Catherine Barber, former general manager of the scheme and Dr Jeffrey Pyne, former managing director of Gorstew Limited,were accused of distributing $1.7 billion of interest and withdrawal surpluses to members without the consent of Gorstew. They then allegedly used forged letters to deceive ATL Chairman Gordon Butch Stewart that consent had been obtained. However, in dismissing the charges, RM Shelly Williams said prosecutors had not made out a case that a reasonable jury could have found the accused guilty. The defence has indicated that its clients are considering filing a suit against the complainant Gordon Butch Stewart.
