Defended liberty as a lawyer today. A few years ago, a developer got zoning variances to squeeze lots of apartments into a small lot in a suburban town by promising only seniors could live there. But before the project was finished, a new developer took over and asked Planning Board to remove the over-55 restriction, The Planning Board agreed, and ignored the vehement opposition of hundreds of homeowners. Many citizens expressed the opinion that the developer paid people to support a project that was bad for the town. Some posted those views online. Nearly a year later, the developer sued one of them for libel and slander. Today, I took the deposition (pre-trial testimony) of that developer. A jury trial is set for later this year. Since the lawsuit was filed, people in that town have not freely and openly spoken out publicly against the project as they did before. grossman4NJ
