Defending Champs Let’s Get It Feel The Terror of Shamarr George and the Squad 65-64 The 2013 Summer Jam basketball Season got off to a bang on Saturday Night at the Jeffrey Caines Arena with two exciting games. If you were a betting man though you might have gone home empty handed as both champion teams lost their games on opening night. In game one defending champions Let’s Get It came up against their old rivals Come To Defend, the only problem was that Come to defend came with a change of attitude and name arriving with an attitude of inflicting Terror on their opponents and changed their name this year to Terror Squad. Well the name change seemed to work because from the whistle it was the much improved Shamarr George who inflicted terror on his opponents and despite all the attempts by head coach Ervin Reds Telemaque to slow him down,Terror Squad just looked solid as a rock on the night and defeated the champs by one point 65-64. If ‘ Lets Get It’ were going to fault their own game it would have to be from the first half where they seemed somewhat lethargic and not totally into their game at all, compared to last season where they began their games much more aggressively. A seemingly stronger and hungrier Terror squad raged terror on the defending champs who amazingly never led the game, not even once in the first three quarters. Jevon Finday and Shamarr George bullied the champs off the boards and never gave them a chance to settle. The third quarter began to take a different face as Stephan Caul and the talented Willaim Penn Jr got more involved in the game but with Terror squad already on the loose and Lets Get It so much on their back foot it was a mammoth task for them to catch up before they eventually passed Terror Squad in the fourth quarter and by which time the team was looking exhausted, as coach Telemaque attempted to roll in the substitutions to give his players extra life. Willaim Penn Jr Show The fourth quarter may well be remembered by some as the Willaim Penn Jr show but unfortunately for him with his team taking the loss, great plays tend to get lost with them as well. With just over a minute left in the fourth quarter Willaim Penn Jr had three unanswered shots including two successive dunks to take his team into the lead for the first time. Unfortunately this was to no avail as Shamarr George responded and took Lets get It off their perch with a one point victory. Speaking with head coach for the defending champions, Ervin Telemaque, despite his obvious disappointment in the loss, gave a very positive response indeed and seemed to feel that his first loss in two years was a wakeup call for his young men stating , “ It was better we lost now early in the season which gives us time to adjust and assess the loss rather than at the end of the season when it could be too late.” Meanwhile coach Eton O’Neal of Terror Squad took nothing for granted showing full respect for the champs and reminded me that this was just the beginning of the season so Lets get It could be a bit rusty. He seemed confident that the champs would be coming back hard at his team and was focused already in preparing for the rematch. In a full analysis of the game it must be taken into consideration that Let’s Get It had played on the sister Island Tortola, the day before and so not surprisingly were a bit flat footed and unable to keep up with the pace of Terror Squad. Nevertheless from an observational standpoint it must also be said that Let’s Get It seemed to have under estimated the strength of Terror Squad and therefore was quite happy to travel across the waters the night before to play in Tortola. With the much improved Shamarr George and a much more aggressive Jevon Findlay off the boards this year Let’s Get would be well advised to ensure they enter their next game against Terror Squad with a fresh team who have not played the day before overseas or elsewhere. The great news is that both teams are much better matched this year and should Eton O’Neal be able to keep his team healthy, with a few changes strategically, he should be able to give the champs a run for their money. In his words,” I was missing two key players so there is still more than what you saw on the court tonight.” Kudos must go out to Ervin Reds Telemaque who despite his first loss in two years never once complained about his team having tired legs, he took his loss like a Lion of Judah and looks forward to an enthralling rematch with the Terror Squad in the future. For Terror Sqaud Shamarr George lead the way with a double double 15 points, 16 rebounds,2 steals , 3 blocks, Jevon Findlay missed his first double double by 1 point , 12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, Aldric Thomas top scored with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals 1 assist and Jehmarey Benjamin 12 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal. For the losing Lets Get It only Willaim Penn Jr with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists, 2 blocks and Stephan Caul 16 points, 9 rebounds, 1 block were impressive. Caul also missed his double double by 1 point.
