Defending Southland Champion Lions Report on Sunday HAMMOND – The defending Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana football team will officially start its preparation for the 2014 season when it reports to campus on Sunday. The Lions, picked in the top three nationally in multiple preseason publications, will return 15 preseason All-Southland Conference players from last season’s team that advanced to the quarterfinals in the FCS playoffs. Walter Payton Award candidate and SLU senior quarterback Bryan Bennett leads an explosive offense, while junior defensive back Harlan Miller, a Buck Buchanan Award candidate, is among the leaders of a deep, talented defense. Southeastern will officially open up practice on Monday with a 7 p.m. workout. The Lions also have scrimmages scheduled for Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. Media Day is also scheduled for Aug. 16 at 3 p.m. Aug. 8 will be the first day in full pads for SLU. Once the in-season schedule begins, the Lions will practice at 4:15 p.m. during the week with Mondays set as off days. The Lions will open up the 2014 season on Aug. 30, hosting Jacksonville at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. That contest will open a six-game home schedule for SLU.
