Definitely NOT for gravy: Many of you were asking in an earlier post how women in the Georgian era relieved themselves while wearing their impossibly large dresses and the answer: the bourdaloue. This type of chamber pot was supposedly named after the French priest Louis Bourdaloue, who was infamous for sermons so long that women resorted to using these during service. Bourdaloues were specifically made for women and came in a variety of designs: silver, porcelain, gilded, and usually painted with flowers or beautiful scenes. They were small and compact, designed so for ease of travel. With the help of a ladys maid, the bourdaloue can be slipped underneath the skirts and whisked away discreetly. So next time you find a beautiful gravy boat in an antiques sale, well... ;) -Lady Georgiana
