Definitely rethink the SEN policy- surely, if they abolished unnecessary testing they could free up some funds to be ring-fenced for SEN assessments, allowing schools to forward more children for assessment, instead of having to find the initial funds from their own pockets. My Oscar got assessed on the basis that his behaviour was disruptive and the school ran an inclusion policy, but I know that there are children at the same school in desperate need of assessment who are missing out because their behaviour does not cause problems, making it difficult for the school to justify allocating much needed resources to them. Statementing should be based on the need of the child to gain help to access education, not on the need of the school to balance the accounts against their behaviour. Stop causing the unnecessary stress of pointless testing and start funding adequate support to help children with additional needs achieve their full potential. When I was at school and year 9 SATS were brought in our teachers refused to put us through them and do you know what? I still passed my GCSEs and nobody died. Kids need education to be engaging, not a series of stress inducing, confidence bashing tests, and this is coming from a natural test taker (utterly crap at coursework though, no self-discipline). The other week Oscar told me he was super stressed because he had to decide, within the next year, what he wanted to be when he grows up. Hes twelve. I told him its nonsense, and when it comes to his options to just take the subjects he enjoys, hell do better, and itll lead to a career, maybe even one he hasnt considered, or heard of yet. #NoBarriersInEducation #StressFreeLearning #LetKidsBeKids
