Definition from The Baltimore Catechism #3, Regarding Anti-Popes: Q. 537. What does anti-pope mean, and who were the anti-popes? A. Anti-pope means a pretended pope. The anti-popes were men who by the aid of faithless Christians or others unlawfully seized and claimed the papal power while the lawful pope was in prison or exile. "...near the time of the Antichrist, will come... a most violent conflict with the Roman Church such that there will be great tribulations. At this time, a schism will be produced in the bosom of the Church on the occasion of the election of the pope... there is one who will be called the true pope, but he will not be truly so. He will persecute the true pope and all those who obey him, so that the majority will declare themselves for the antipope rather than for the true pope. But this antipope will have a sad end, and the true one will remain the unique and uncontested pontiff. ..." (Prophecy of Ven. Bernard de Bustis, 15th C.) ___________________________________________________________ Example of a [1] True Pope and the [2] opposing anti-pope: The October 1958 Conclave produced ONE OF EACH: [1] POPE GREGORY XVII -- VICAR OF CHRIST -- (AKA Cardinal G. Siri) and [2] ANTI-POPE JOHN XXIII -- VICAR OF ANTI-CHRIST -- (AKA A. Roncalli) No. [2] headed the Schism and placed no. [1] under GRAVE DURESS HIS ENTIRE PONTIFICATE, AND THEN BEING MURDERED (MARTYRED) FOR BEING DISCOVERED APPOINTING HIS CARDINALS TO CANONICALLY ELECT HIS SUCCESSOR WHEN NECESSARY--WHICH WAS DULY ACCOMPLISHED MAY 3, 1991.
