Degrowth conference is looking for an english moderator to this panel on degrowth technologies, via Heike Löschmann Degrowth 2014 Proposal for panel discussion Title: Degrowth Technologies – global experiences Preparation by: Andrea Vetter (Attac, Berlin), Linda Nierling (KIT, Karlsruhe) The relation between growth critique and technology critique is - inspired by Jacques Ellul - very strong already from the beginning of both debates in the 1970ies. Today technological innovation is central for many green growth strategies. Actually the degrowth debate has to find its position between these two poles: between the critique and the enabling potentials of technologies. This panel aims to discuss the role of technologies in a future degrowth society on the basis of actual examples from countries in the Global North and South. The panelists will present different contexts and possibilities of technology development and use, ranging from ‘conventional’ energy saving concepts in Europe, the restraints and benefits of adapted technologies in Africa to the transition to a commons-based society in South America. In the discussion we want to examine whether these examples can be considered as ‘degrowth technologies’. • What are the criteria which define degrowth technologies? • Which circumstances ban a technology to contribute to a Degrowth society? • Which kind of participation and knowledge is needed for a technology development oriented on a degrowth transition? • What is important to consider when evaluating existing technologies and /or when new technologies are developed? • What are possible paths for the future? panelists Confirmed: Michel Bauwens (Belgium/Thailand, founder of P2P-Foundation, research director of the FLOK society project, Ecuador) - could talk about the idea of P2P-Production and the efforts Ecuador undertakes to become the first economy worldwide based on free open knowledge. Alice Hooker-Stroud (GB, ZeroCarbonBritain and Center for Alternative Technologies (CAT), Wales) – could talk about the experiences the CAT made in the last 40 years, and what it would mean technologically to imagine a zero-carbon Britain Invited: Allan Kalangi (NAPE, Uganda) – could talk about the challenges of implementing and developing appropriate technologies on a grassroots level; the possibilities and pitfalls of self-organizing in contrast to development aid Faciliator: NN Possible order of event • moderator opens panels and present panelists (5 Min.) • panelists present main ideas (each person 5-10 Min. > overall 30 Min.) • questions from moderator: 1-2 for each person (30 Min.) • questions and answers with audience (45 Min.) • final remarks (10 Min.)
