Dehydration in Dogs. As summer kicks in and the weather becomes warmer we need to keep a close eye on our pets. Akin to us humans dogs also drink more fluids during these summer months. Dehydration occurs when there is a lack of water within the body that can cause major complications. General signs of dehydration are: Sunken eyes Lethargy Loss of appetite Dry Mouth Depression If you suspect your dog is dehydrated please contact the veterinary hospital immediately. To try and prevent your dog from becoming dehydrated you can: Provide clean water at all times - washing the bowl often to prevent bacteria from forming. Monitor your dogs’ water intake - dogs need at least 40-60mls / kg / day. Have a water bowl with a weighted bottom to prevent spillage. Avoid chaining up your dog outside in the heat as they may get tangled preventing access to the water.
