Delaware bans texting while driving, a practice that has been shown to be inherently unsafe. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), each day in the United States, more than nine people are killed and more than 1,060 people are injured in crashes where the motor vehicle operator was distracted while driving. There are three main types of distraction: visual, manual, and cognitive. While distracted driving can be caused many activities, texting is considered especially dangerous because it combines all three types of distraction. In Delaware, the fine for texting while driving is only $50 per offense -- the lowest in the Northeast. By contrast, Alaska has the highest penalty in the nation: a fine of $10,000 per offense and possible jail time. (To see an article and chart on fines around the country for distracted driving, see the link on our Comments section.) Should Delaware consider raising the fine for texting while driving to discourage this dangerous activity?
