Delicatessen (1991) I’m willing to bet The Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson were influenced by this black romantic comedy that involves the idea of cannibalism. In a world of unknown timeframe, an apocalyptic event has left food scarce. A butcher and landlord has been driven to the point to where he sets up a handyman ad in order to bring in fresh meat for his shop. When his latest victim to be, a former clown, shows up for the job, complications ensue when the butcher’s daughter falls in love with him. A race ensues by her to ensure that her new love escapes his fate. Filled with quirky characters with a French sensibility, the film is more amusing than gut busting funny. The movie ridicules the lengths the butcher and his tenants will go in order to eat; as it does the vegan resistance forces that team up with the daughter in the 3rd act. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting when I rented this. I was expecting more of a horror comedy and I didn’t get that. Thus I was disappointed a bit by the film. Still, I can appreciate what it was going for overall with its strange nature. It’s just not something I need or want to watch again. “Kane” youtube/watch?v=Tg3V8HDK5go
