I welcome the opportunity to respond. I am aware there are many Internet articles and blog postings indicating that I directed, pressured, or otherwise influenced the USPS to choose CBRE in order to financially profit from the sale of post office buildings. Let me say clearly: this is not true. First, you should know that Congress has no role in choosing which real estate services company is retained by the USPS. As you know, the USPS is experiencing severe financial problems and has determined a restructuring is necessary. When the Senate considered postal reform in 2012, I drafted an amendment with Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) that placed a moratorium on the closure of postal facilities in states that conduct elections by mail--including California. The amendment unanimously passed the Senate, but unfortunately no action was taken in the House of Representatives. Had this been enacted, the legislation would have prevented the closure to post offices until November 12, 2012, and would have required the Postal Service to study the effect of closing or consolidating a mail processing facility on the ability of the affected community to vote by mail.
