Delmarva Sea Kayak Kamper Oct 9-12-- Possible date - TopicsExpress

Delmarva Sea Kayak Kamper Oct 9-12-- Possible date change? Several people who have expressed interest in this trip, including myself, may have a conflict on the original dates of Oct 9-12. If we changed it to Oct 2-5, would it cause a problem for anyone? There are a number of trips going out both weekends. Also, if you are interested in this trip on either date, please shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] (or through FaceBook) so Mike W. and I can get a feel for total numbers. Here is a description of the trip: This will be an overnight trip designed for sea kayaks. We will depart the Harrisburg area at 8 am on Day 1 and drive to Pokomoke River State Park in southern Maryland (~ 4.5 hrs). We will camp in the park for all three nights. Day 1 may include paddling a section of the Pokomoke River. Day 2 will take us to Chincoteague Island which could include wildlife-watching and, depending on conditions, a foray out Chincoteague Inlet to the ocean. On Day 3 well go to the Crisfield/Janes Island area with a possible crossing to Smith Island. Day 4 will be left open, but include driving home. The itinerary can be modified in any number of ways to suit the conditions and the participants. Due to the driving distance, the trip may be cancelled up to several days ahead of time if the weather forecast is dismal. Requirements: Though we will not be looking for highly challenging conditions, we may be exposed to weather and water conditions that would not be suitable for open boats, recreational kayaks with large cockpits, or inexperienced paddlers. Sea kayaks of at least 14 feet in length with fore and aft watertight bulkheads or flotation bags are recommended. Equipment must include PFD, spray skirt, spare paddle, paddle float, and bilge pump. Paddlers should be capable of both self- and assisted rescue, be comfortable in winds up to 15 mph with moderate chop and current, and able to paddle up to 12 miles per day. A pre-trip meeting of participants may be planned to discuss itinerary, camping and paddling equipment, and other details. This will also give participants an opportunity to discuss sharing transportation, camping equipment, and food if they wish to do so. Costs: Campsites are $27 per night and can accommodate up to 6 people each with a maximum of two vehicles. Camping equipment and food will be left to each individual, though a few restaurant meals are likely.
