Delta Winning ‘War’ On Unemployment, Poverty Through Micro Credit-Uduaghan Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan says his administration, for the past seven years has been winning the ‘war’ against the twin economic challenge of unemployment and poverty through the State government’ s Delta Micro Credit Programme (DMCP) platform. Governor Uduaghan who disclosed this while sharing his administration’s Service Delivery performance to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and pro-poor programmes in the state, said his administration was committed to the poverty reduction and employment generation of his people. The governor who was speaking at the 8th Annual MSME Finance Conference/Entrepreneurial awards organized by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Abuja, said at present, over 100,000 Deltans have so far benefitted from the programme. According to the state governor, majority of the beneficiaries who are majorly the female folks, are engaged in agriculture, cottage industry, shoe/leather works, ethnic clothing (Akwa Ochan), among others. “Unemployment and increasing poverty ratio has been a major economic challenge and my administration, when we came on board about seven years ago understood this challenge and immediately, we took up the initiative to tackle this global issue headlong”. “To achieve this, we decided that we should drive this if we take the crusade back to the people at the grass root via the state government’s interest-free loan through the DMCP platform”. The governor allays the fears of Deltans and Nigerians on sustainability challenge of the programme saying that his administration is already liaising with the state House of Assembly to adopt a legal framework that would engender sustainability. Governor Uduaghan while underscoring the import of the DMCP project in the state explained that the programme will also aid his administration’s ‘Delta Beyong Oil’ initiative. Meanwhile, one of the benefiting groups of the DMCP project, Sion Economic Allianz, Issele-uku who are into pineapple production, bagged the best National Farmer awrd (Arable Crop) at the event.
