Delta to spend N1b on modern tractor equipment for farmers The Delta Government says it is proposing N1 billion for the purchase of modern tractor equipment for farmers in 2015. Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan disclosed this in Asaba on Wednesday while presenting the 2015 budget proposal to the state House of Assembly for consideration. He said that the farming equipment would further boost mechanised agriculture and improve the productivity of farmers through extension services. Uduaghan said that the state was also proposing N500 million for Agricultural Youth Development programme in 2015. He said that the programme would help to encourage youths to invest their energies and resourcefulness on farming activities. According to him, this programme will help to reduce unemployment, hunger and malnutrition. Uduaghan said that the state had remained focused on agriculture as a tool of achieving its “Delta Beyond Oil’’ initiative, especially in the area of fish farming, among others. “Fish farming has become a major source of employment. “We promote the growth and development of fisheries activities through fisheries surveillance and direct assistance to fish farmers and this has improved the lives of our people immensely. “As at today, we have about 4,780 fish farmers in the state as against less than 200 in 2007. “This is a reflection of the awareness created on the economic potential of fish farming,’’ he said.
