Democracy: Rest In Peace. If we want to resurrect Democracy we need: 1) campaign spending limits 2) campaign donation limits (or better yet: 100% publicly funded campaigns). Weve gone desperately far in the wrong direction. Now, limitless bribes can be legally and anonymously given in broad daylight. (Scoundrels used to at least have to sneak in suitcases full of cash.) 3) re-regulation of the media to break what formerly would have been illegal monopolies; revive the fairness doctrine; guarantee FREE and equal airtime to candidates, so the best message wins over the biggest bank account. (This is NOT big government corrupting the freemarket. Its stopping the pilfering of our publicly owned resources. Yes, WE the people are the stewards of the airwaves and we should be so with the infrastructure of the Internet. Think of it like our national parks, theyre there for all. 4) Amend the constitution to overturn corporate personhood. The Republicans have been brazenly advancing the agenda of corporate power over the people. But what do we do when the Democrats push along these sneaky catastrophes? Clintons most regrettable action was further deregulating the media with his telecommunications act. This little pen stroke below may prove to be Obamas most destructive act.
