Democratic Congressman John Barrow (D-GA) made headlines over the weekend for his scathing critique of President Obama’s upcoming trip to Africa. The trip carries a whopping price tag of $100 million! “Now, while you’re all fired up… let’s go now to what Yahoo is calling his triumphant return to his homeland, the president’s trip to Africa,” Glenn said on radio this morning. “Here’s a Georgia Democrat, John Barrow, criticizing this $100 million trip.” BARROW: Madam speaker, very soon thousands of folks in my district in Georgia and even more across the state will be furloughed as a result of the budget sequester. Studies have shown that the sequester will cost the Georgia economy approximately $107 million. Meanwhile reports circulated this week that President Obama’s upcoming trip to Africa will cost the taxpayers nearly $100 million. Madam speaker, no one here questions the need for security for our commander‑in‑chief, but we do question the need for such expensive trips when so many folks across the country are being forced to cut back because Congress can’t get its act together. A trip of this magnitude isn’t unusual, but these are hard times. $100 million could be better used to keep folks on the job. I urge the president and everyone at the federal level to lead by example and not take the fact that Congress can’t get its act together and rub that in the faces of hard working Americans. With that I yield back. “Here’s the interesting thing,” Glenn said. “You can take this and you can just say, what do you say we don’t do $50 million conventions for the IRS and we save the $50 million they’ve just sent to ten different households as refund checks? There’s $100 million there. There’s $100 million there.” “Now, I know that’s nickel‑and‑dime to the, you know, to the president. He says that that’s no big deal. I’m sorry, it is a big deal,” he continued. “$100 million, how many people are working their brains out that you had to take money from their check? How many of us, how many of us have given our blood, sweat and tears to make up just that $100 million? You don’t find $100 million on the street corner. How many of us have worked our whole year and worked the first, what, three or four months of that year to send you money in Washington to have you abuse it like that? It’s offensive and it’s immoral.” Stu was quick to point out that while he agreed with Rep. Barrow’s criticism of the trip’s price tag, his decision to tie it into the sequester is pretty unconvincing. “His tie‑in to the sequester, his point there makes it so obvious that the sequester is a BS argument,” Stu said. “If they are making trips for $100 million, we have $100 million right there from the IRS, how many more programs? You’re telling me you can’t cut 1 or 2% off of that budget. It’s insulting to say that.” “It’s so offensive. And when will the American people be outraged,” Glenn asked. “They have taken your money. And they are growing the size of this government that is so inept and so out of control that this is the way they’re spending your money.”
