Demolitions Continue In Nakuru’s Pipeline, Barnabas Areas By Anne Mugure Monday 16 June 2014 More than 100 illegally erected structures at Barnabas and Pipeline areas of Nakuru town were on Friday demolished by Nakuru county government askaris. The demolitions, which took more than three hours, were carried out following orders by Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua. More than 59 armed police officers stood guard as the officers demolished the structures located on both sides of Nakuru-Nairobi highway. Some traders opted to demolish their structures before the county bulldozer moved in. They managed to salvage a few of their valuables before the structures were flattened. Unlike previous demolitions that were marred by running battles, traders did not resist though those interviewed said that no notice was given to them. Four county government lorries were on standby to transport timber and iron sheets that were used to construct the structures. Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has on several occasions, since the start of the demolitions, said that his government will strive to restore Nakuru’s lost glory of being the cleanest town in East Africa. The Governor has won the support of a majority of the Nakuru MCAs, except Biashara wards MCA Stephen Kuria, who was recently charged at a Nakuru court over allegations of joining the protesting traders to throw stones at police officers. He was released on bail. Kurias ward was the most affected by the previous demolitions and he has called on the Governor to dialogue with the traders. Hivisasa
