Demons fall in home opener to Hilldale Beggs defense unable to contain high-powered Hornets By LARRY OWEN Times sports editor BEGGS - The Beggs Golden Demons suffered their first loss of the Lee Blankenship era this past Friday night, falling to the Hilldale Hornets by a 61-27 margin. The loss drops the Demons to 2-1 on the year, heading into this Friday’s 3A-6 district opener against the 1-2 Kellyville Ponies. The scoring began with Beggs getting on the scoreboard first in the first quarter. The opening score would come on a 6-yard run by Lane Bouse. Blaine Harvey tacked on the PAT kick to give the Demons the early 7-0 advantage. Hilldale would get a pair of running TDs from Hunter Woods in the first quarter to put the visitors on top. Chandler Puckett would split the uprights with the PAT kick following both scores to give Hilldale the 14-7 lead at the end of one. Bradley Campbell would score from a yard out to open the second quarter scoring, while Puckett’s successful PAT kick would increase the Hornets’ lead to 21-7. Bouse would make it a 21-13 contest with a 7-yard run, while Campbell score his second 1-yard TD run of the frame, while Puckett converted his fourth straight extra point kick to send the Demons into halftime trailing 28-13. Puckett opened the second half scoring with a 10-yard TD pass to Campbell. Puckett then toed his fifth consecutive PAT to make it a 35-13 contest. Woods would score from 23 yards out for the next Hilldale score. Puckett would miss the extra point - his first of the game - to give Hilldale a 41-13 lead. The Demons would tally the next score in the third quarter, as sophomore QB Tyler Marr tossed a 70-yard TD pass to Shaliamere Rentie. The run attempt on the conversion try was no good, cutting the deficit to 41-19. Woods would find the end zone for the fourth time in the game late in the third on a 15-yard run, giving Hilldale a 47-19 advantage, heading into the final frame. Puckett would connect with Hunter Olsen on an 18-yard pass to open the fourth quarter scoring, then tacked on the PAT kick to increase the visitor’s lead to 54-19. Woods would make it 60-19 on a 3-yard run, then Puckett would split the uprights with the extra point try, increasing the HHS lead to 61-19. The final tally of the game would come when Joseph Plunkett would return a fumble 32 yards for a score. Bouse would cross the goal line on the conversion try to make the final margin 61-27, Hilldale. Friday’s district opener against Kellyville is set for 7:30 p.m. at Golden Demon Stadium in Beggs.
