Demonstrations took place peacefully in Denmark - both against Islam and for diversity and peace Taking a leaf from German anti-Islam movement PEGIDA, on 19th Jan, its Danish branch arranged three demonstrations in Denmark, in the capital Copenhagen, in the second largest city Århus and the port city of Esbjerg in the South Jutland. Fortunately, Denmark has a large anti-Fascist and anti-racist movement that does not sit still and allow such openly racist and intolerant events to take place unchallenged. To counter the hateful demos, many more decent and peaceful people met and demonstrated against PEGIDA’s arrangements. According to the police, the demos were peaceful and the huge presence of the police was just as bystanders. One young organosers of the Århus demo against PEGIDA said to the media; “ We see that the message coming from PEGIDA and Pegida.dk is a message of hate. Pegida.dks demonstration is not just about distancing to extreme Islam. If you follow their postings on facebook, then you will discover quickly that Pegida.dk represents the very right-wing people linked to Denmarks National Front. Several of the entries contained racist comments.” The Danish Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard said to the newspaper Politiken. The vast, vast majority of Muslims in Denmark feel also attacked by what has happened. Therefore, I think it is wrong to signal that there is a general problem with Islam. The experience is the opposite.”
