Demspey said the funds she raises will go to Be Not Afraid, a nonprofit organization based in North Carolina that provides assistance to families who have received a prenatal diagnosis indicating their child will likely have a disease or not survive after birth and decide to carry to term. Dempsey said she knew next to nothing about Down syndrome before she heard about Be Not Afraid at a Right to Life conference, but she has gained a broader perspective of the disability through her project. She said misconceptions about the effects of Down syndrome are widespread and cause people to treat those with the condition poorly. “From stuff that I’ve read online by researching for this project, a lot of people just don’t know what Down syndrome is and they’ve been told over and over from media and friends that it’s something you don’t want to mess with,” Dempsey said. Dempsey said education about Down syndrome is important, and many people often underestimate or misunderstand people with Down syndrome. “I think that the way that we speak about these children is definitely something that we don’t really realize is offensive,” Dempsey said. “I really believe in education. I think it’s hard to do something if you don’t know what it is.” thebatt/news/peace-love-down-syndrome-1.3159000#.U0VX_NNlDFo
