Denis, Columbus, Furman. These are the names of three homeless people Ive shared a meal with in the last two weeks. Ive only been working downtown for 10 months, but right from the start I knew it wasnt the suburban world I was used to. I rarely ever carry cash, so Im frequently unable to offer anyone assistance. But Ive started buying two sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, etc, instead of one. Then I walk. Most often no more than for a couple minutes before I see someone who is obviously without a home, job, or steady meal. Many of these people know me by sight. And when we pass on the street, Im greeted with eye contact, a smile, a nod, and simple pleasantries. At first I was overwhelmed. I had no idea what could be done to help everyone. As it turns out, sometimes is just as simple as buying an extra sandwich and extending an olive branch.
