Departing judge has shot at NT laws Departing chief magistrate Hilary Hannam has taken some shots at the NT Government. After working in Darwin as chief magistrate for three years, Ms Hannam recently announced she will leave in August to work at the Family Court in NSW. "The bar for intervention, in my view, in remote communities and for Aboriginal children is simply far too high," Ms Hannam said yesterday. She said during her time in Darwin the situation had not improved and criticised the treatment of vulnerable children, mandatory sentencing, and the abolition of SMART courts. "The sort of circumstances in which the department would intervene for non-Aboriginal children is quite different than the level of intervention for Aboriginal children," Ms Hannam told the NT News.
