Depending on the structure, piles are usually classified into two types: Friction piles and bearing piles. Friction piles are driven into soil that is fairly consistent and the tip is not seated into a hard layer. The load is transferred to the adjoining soil by friction between the pile and the surrounding soil. Bearing piles are driven vertically and used for the direct support of vertical loads. Bearing piles transfer the load through a soft soil to an underlying, more firm soil.
