Depicting social changes - Shanghai Biennial kicks off youtu.be/_j9IfN4ND-o The 10th #ShanghaiBiennial began Sunday at the #Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum. The 4-month on-going art exhibition will present works from over 70 artists and centers on the theme of social change. As #China’s longest running contemporary #art biennial, the Shanghai Biennial is also one of the nation’s most important international visual art exhibitions. The 2014 edition of the Biennial is themed “social factory” and intends to explore an interlocking set of questions on the relationship between the changing society and the people, especially with the massive influx of data and digital profiling. Anselm Franke, the chief curator for the 10th Shanghai Biennial, said that the notion of the “social factory” raises questions on the relations between collectivity, the self, and images. How do images depict the complexities of the social experience? And how do they react to the simplification and standardization of this experience through institutions and power? The biennial also tries to reconnect contemporary art to a changing society and the public in a more popular way, with many artists seeking ways of delivering their message through interactive devices. Running until next March, the works featured this year have been submitted from 20 countries and regions. Specific contexts and themes include reflections on childhood, emotions and their representation, and the relations between noises to signal in media histories.
