Deputies Conduct Assist with Air Rescue of Stranded Hiker “We just ask that people stay on the regular groomed trails.” These are the words spoken by Sergeant Shane Burnham after a two hour rescue operation to save three stranded hikers one of which had been seriously injured. Today at 3:00 p.m., deputies were flagged down and rushed to the Opal Creek Wilderness on a reported hiker who had fallen thirty feet after her rope broke. Sinn Escobar, age 28, her boyfriend Jacob Ross, age 32 and their dog Gracie were making their way down to a pool of water on a steep decline. The trio were using a rope left by previous hikers and that rope gave way causing Ms. Escobar to fall an estimated thirty feet. Ms. Escobar seriously injured her leg and head in the fall. After deputies arrived they accessed the situation and knew they would need additional resources. That is when they called the Army Air National Guard and the Salem Fire Department Technical Rescue Team. Together all of the law enforcement, military and Fire agencies worked together to rescue Ms. Escobar, Mr. Ross and Gracie the dog. Ms. Escobar was air lifted from her fall location and transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. The Salem Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team then assisted Mr. Ross and Gracie the dog up the steep hillside. The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank these additional agencies for their assistance. The Lyons Fire Department, Stayton Fire Department, US Forrest Service and the Bureau of Land Management Law Enforcement.
