Deputy First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has called on the BAE defence contractor to come clean over its plans for the Govan yard and its 1,500-strong workforce amid speculation that it doesnt have a future. BAE have said they are considering closing one of its three major shipyards in a move that could threaten more than 1,500 jobs. In a recent statement to The Herald newspaper, a BAE spokesman said: Clydeport is removing dockside portal cranes which are no longer fit for purpose. Its hoped the Deputy First Minister can startle her unionist opponents into siding with her to exert pressure on the company to maintain this base on the Clyde, though for how long is anyones guess. Once the threat of independence is lifted one way or another its feared BAE will close one of the Clydes yards. But some union members have said negotiations with an independent Scottish Government could give the yards more security and it was also suggested there were higher expectations of there being a heavier workload after the country starts governing itself again with new shipping required as the country immediately sets about building its own defences. #indyref
