Der Silbersee is a musical work by the Jewish composer Kurt Weill. Der Silbersee (The Silver Lake) tells the story of a policeman who gives up his profession to help others, in some cases with dire results. In the end he escapes with a former thief who has also had a conversion of heart - in the last scene they are crossing a frozen lake, as one of them sings Wer weiter muss, den trägt der Silbersee (Silverlake will bear whoever must go farther). They go forward in their lives with confidence and hope in their own and in the worlds humanity. Der Silbersee was produced only a few times in Germany in early 1933. It had the unfortunate luck of being staged just after Hitler took power. Soon performances were forbidden and Kurt Weill fled to Paris. Der Silbersee is less-known that much of Weills other work, but has been performed many times in the 20th century, notably by the New York City Opera in 1980. The music is challenging for singers who must also act, and this complexity is part of the reason it is not usually performed. Instead, sections of it are usually sung in a concert setting.
