Derby practice #2 tonight. Yes, I am going to mostly post my own self-eval as I progress through the season. Ok, the good: - My strength is WAY higher than it was in previous years. I was able to stop very strong players, push them out of bounds, and not get pushed out of bounds. - My speed is also very good despite being sore from squats & dl yesterday. - My narrow plows were actually quite good and I got to practice a bit of the Slam on the brakes and control the person behind you.) Things I need to improve on: - My hips are not super flexible yet, so when I one foot plow, my hips open just a smidge, and when they get pushed on, I spin open. I need to work on my hip flexibility so I can hold my lane solidly CLOSED. - I need to finish my hits to the line - My balance when transitioning between getting pushed and supporting my team mates needs work. I think part of this come from never having played, consistently, at the top level - I need to stay away from the love and move my hips through gaps in the middle, Im still attacking walls very square. - SO... I have strength, now I need to know how to use it in certain skills and in a team setting. I am studying my team mates movements and learning how the play and move more with each drill. Other high fives for me? I didnt get flustered. In the past if I was doing poorly or not succeeding I would beat myself up for it. Tonight I looked at what went good or bad and set a goal, internally, for the next round of the drill. Charm taught me so much about how to quietly evaluate myself on the fly and how to appreciate the game of derby. This was a great starting point to know where I need to improve. The mantra words for the season: Patience, Diligence, Quiet Coachability
