Dereks Birding, 5/21-22: Local Patches. With what appeared to be a strong flight last night, I spent the morning at Florida Lake Park. Variable fog through the night added ambiguity to the interpretation of the radar, so I didnt know what to really expect. Furthermore, as May progresses, more and more migrants are females (most arrive later than the males of the respective species) which - since they dont sing - are harder to detect. And finally, the fog never did burn off, so birds werent sucked to the sunny lakeside edges. Nonetheless, I did have 14 species of warblers today, led by 15 Common Yellowthroats and 14 Black-throated Green Warblers. A Philadelphia Vireo was a good bird, and my FOY Alder Flycatcher arrived. Yesterday, I tallied a dozen species of warblers at Hedgehog Mountain Park, led by a goodly 24 Ovenbirds and 11 Black-throated Greens. On the way back, a cluster of apple trees along Pownal Road yielded 6 species of warblers (at one point, all in one tree!), including my FOY Tennessee Warbler.
