Design 10 Architectural Thesis Part 4... On Failure Not to Graduate and have the Diploma... During my 5th year in Bicol University College of Engineering, 1987-1988 a very strong typhoon hit and ravaged the entire Bicol Region particularly Albay and Sorosgon. It was Typhoon Sisang, and it was November 25 1987, early start of the second semester. The time that we were preparing to defend our thesis, almost all the presentation drawings were done and almost ready for the Oral Defense. Our home were destroyed and devastated so with our moral to graduate and the excitement to walk in the stage eventually became frustration and an empty dream. Albay and Legazpi was in COMPLETE DARKNESS...from Christmas Season to Holy Week. Everyone is down and almost the same of what we experienced last Typhoon Reming. There is NO chance for us to repeat again our thesis works. We did NOT ask for help, compassion or sympathy with the BU Admin, professors or from any other else. It is almost a great time for support and allow us to graduate without THESIS. We were then 18 graduating Arki Students deprived of the graduation and diploma. BUT WE FOLLOW THE UNIVERSITY POLICY, BECAUSE WE CONSIDER THAT PRESENTING AND DEFENDING YOUR THESIS IS A SACRED THING IN ARCHITECTURE. We never resort to any very malicious means..we just simply follow the Policy...No Thesis...No Diploma.........The University only GIFT for us is to walk the stage but Diploma and credentials will be issued only upon compliance with the Thesis and defend it successfully before a Panel of Jurors. BUT THEY NEVER HEAR FROM US...ESPECIALLY AGAINST OUR PROFESSORS AND OUR ALMA MATER.......I was able to present and defended my Thesis in 1990 after almost 3 years........and in December of 1991 I PASSED THE BOARD EXAMS for ARCHITECTS.........
