Desist from jungle justice or face the law – Police The Police Command in Ekiti State has warned residents in the state to desist from jungle justice or face the wrath of the law. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, gave the warning while speaking with journalists in Ikere-Ekiti on Sunday. He said that the warning became necessary because of the rampant cases of jungle justice in the state. The police image maker specifically referred to the recent unlawful killing and burning of a woman suspected to be a kidnapper at Ikere-Ekiti by an irate mob. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspect was said to have been caught by some residents while trying to kidnap a three-year-old girl at Ori Audu Area of the town. According to him, the action of the people of the town is not only illegal but also condemnable. He stressed that only the police or other security agents had the constitutional right to handle such case at preliminary stage for onward prosecution in court. ”It is a barbaric action for people to kill and set ablaze a suspect without reporting to the security agencies to effect arrest and investigate the suspect. Babayemi added that police investigation would have led to the arrest of other suspects for their alleged role in the matter.
