Desperate times desperate measures. This is where this little Ring-tail Possum calls home. Lacks of suitable habitat such as hollow logs/trees have pushed the Wildlife to find alternatives. Fruit for thought: A hollow cylinder on its own might be insignificant. However, once it is covered by dense foliage of a Pittosporum undulatum it’s potential as an alternative habitat increases. Dense coverage modifies the temperature and provides more shelter against wind and rain. The cylinder is also quite selective as bigger/ older possums would be excluded automatically (simply due to their size). Hence only the very young and most vulnerable can use it ever. In other words it provides temporary accommodation until the young find a more natural suitable home. The photo was taken by Bushland Management team at Balls Head Bushcare site.
