Despite Animals Australia informing the Department of Agriculture - TopicsExpress

Despite Animals Australia informing the Department of Agriculture and the Australian Livestock Exporters Council (ALEC) of “widespread, ongoing” breaches of ESCAS in Jordan, there is new evidence of up to 1000 Australian sheep being sold outside of approved supply chains in Jordan, ahead of the upcoming Eid (Festival of Sacrifice). The breaches were reported in the same markets as last year’s festival, where Australian sheep were “dragged, thrown, stuffed in car boots and brutally killed in the streets.” Animals Australia claims that the sheep are “being offered for sale by livestock merchants in locations that have on numerous occasion been reported for breaches.” Furthermore, the investigation has revealed that “ear tags have been removed from sheep to prevent individual identification, which can link the animals to the exporter legally responsible for them.” This complaint will be Animals Australia’s sixth formal legal complaint of recurring breaches in Jordan, since June 2013. The Department of Agriculture has said that it is taking these allegations “seriously”, and claims to have already issued “an advice notice to all livestock exporters outlining their responsibility to be vigilant in delivering their special management plans for Eid.”
