Despite No vote the UK will never be the same again The Scottish referendum result is disappointing especially because the Yes campaign lost despite making real waves, but nonetheless the dynamism and breadth of the movement was a huge a achievement and the result should be a massive wake up call to all progressive forces. The Yes campaign went from being on the margins to mobilising a great swathe of working class voters and giving the British establishment the scare of its life. It uncovered and mobilised a bitter resentment so many feel against the Westminster elite. The Yes vote was way strongest in working class areas. The campaign showed that with a clear lead a massive, class-conscious, left wing movement can be built against the democratic deficit, austerity and war. Alex Salmonds resignation earlier this afternoon shows his gamble to push for independence-lite did not pay off. We have two meetings set up in London and Newcastle next week and others planned with speakers from the Radical Independence Campaign. Please share the details widely, get along to the meetings and bring your friends. If you want to organise a meeting in your area email [email protected]. The UK will never be the same A new debate about democracy and privilege has been launched which will cause big problems for the main parties. Counterfire has been at the forefront of arguing for the break up of the British state and our comrades in Scotland, the ISG, have been central to mobilising in the Radical Independence Campaign. There is a crisis of representation across Britain. The anger and radicalism that emerged in Glasgow and Aberdeen exists half-submerged in cities and towns around the country. In the next months we will be throwing ourselves in to the debate about our broken democracy but also stepping up the campaign over the issues that the Scottish people kept coming back to - inequality, austerity and war. Please help us by getting involved now in every way you can: Help publicise the Britain needs a pay rise demonstration on 18 October, called by the TUC, backed by the Peoples Assembly and promote the Peoples Question Time meeting with Russeull brand on 9 Oct. Please get in touch with your local Counterfire group orPeoples Assembly to help mobilise. Campaign in your area against plans to escalate intervention in Iraq. Download thepetition, get in touch with your local Stop the War group. Donate to the Counterfire appeal online. We have big challenges ahead of us and we need your financial support to help us meet them.
