Despite growing global acceptance of more effective, humane non-animal trauma training methods, a recent story in The Guardian revealed shocking details on how the Ministry of Defence continues to participate in cruel training programmes in which pigs are shot, cut up and killed. Please help right now to save pigs, cats, monkeys, rabbits and other animals from the misery of often deadly – and entirely unnecessary – experiments and training programmes. The Ministry of Defence ships military doctors to Denmark to participate in these training exercises, which are anything but modern and which appear to be in breach of EU guidelines that prohibit the use of animals when non-animal methods exist. Live pigs are shot with high-velocity bullets to inflict life-threatening organ injuries and bone fractures so that military surgeons can practice on them. The animals who survive the ordeal are subsequently killed. These exercises continue even though all the trauma training skills needed by the British military can be effectively taught with simulators and other non-animal methods, many of which are already being used by our NATO allies military medical programmes. Multiple studies have shown that medical-care providers who learn trauma treatment using simulators that accurately mimic human anatomy and physiology are better prepared to treat injured patients than those who are trained using inhumane and crude animal-based methods. One study by US researchers and military medical experts, which was published in the journal Military Medicine, found that nearly 80 per cent of all NATO nations – 22 countries, including Germany, France and Spain — no longer use any animals to train military personnel. You may recall the released gruesome undercover video footage last year of a military training course. In the footage, instructors are seen whistling and laughing while cutting off the limbs of live goats with tree trimmers, stabbing the animals and pulling out their internal organs. Goats moaned and kicked during the mutilation. The investigation of this training led to citations against the contractor who conducted the training and significant changes to US military policy on similar trainings. The mutilation of animals revealed in that exposé is not unlike what pigs endure today in exercises involving British military doctors. Its about time that Britain got on board with many of its allies in halting cruel training exercises Contact your MP /MEP and the Ministry of Defence to express your disgust at this horrific torture of defenceless, sensitive and intelligent animals.
