Despite its name, the Mission wasnt always a bastion of Hispanic culture. In fact, it used to be a primarily Irish neighborhood at the turn of the 20th century. But, like the rest of the city, its has continually evolved in the face of wave after wave of ethnically and economically-varied residents. In recent years, however, the rate of change has accelerated exponentially since the Great Recession much to the dismay of displaced local residents. If the city is a reflection of the people that populate it, longtime residents soon may no longer recognize the face looking back at them. San Francisco Chronicle has taken a fascinating and in-depth look at the scale of this demographic sea change through the lens of life along the 24th street corridor. Check out the video above for a brief overview of the situation before diving into the Chronicles exhaustive coverage here.
