Despite my loathing of Activision and what they did to my memories - TopicsExpress

Despite my loathing of Activision and what they did to my memories of the Diablo franchise, I figured I had better at least play the demo. So, I logged in to my Battlenet account for the first time in five years (its a real pain in the ass, the hoops you have to jump through to verify your account after its been inactive that long... but thats a different story). Installed the Diablo 3 Demo. First impressions are that its just as lackluster as I had anticipated. No skill tree. Small, linear dungeons with no sense of exploration. I could go on. But, believe it or not, thats not why Im making this post. The dungeon layout got me thinking: Dungeons are not well thought out in these sorts of games. I remember playing D&D. Dungeons would have a sense of purpose. There would be living quarters. Kitchens. Recreation areas. Storerooms.... not just a random hodgepodge of rooms that all look the same, laid out in a chaotic configuration. Im all for random generation. But random dungeon generation should still give the map a sense of purpose. Like it was lived in and used by the creatures that inhabit it. Like there was some thought put into the layout to make navigation sensible for the people who created it. Surely our abilities as game creators has evolved to the point where we can do better than just throwing some cobblestones on a random maze generator?
