Despite seven reductions in fuel prices, passengers fare cut remains elusive ................ Srinagar : Despite repeated reduction in fuel prices since August last, transport authorities have failed to arrive at a decision to prune down the passenger fare which was hiked following rise in fuel prices. According to details received from Transporters here in Kashmir, Existing Passenger fares are more than two years old and every time there was an increase of one to two rupees in diesel Prices, transporters would raise the fare without waiting for government notification; yet despite seven reductions on diesel, petrol prices since August 2014, transporters are making hay of administrative inertia and earning more than double the previous years. While the cumulative reduction in petrol price has been Rs 9.36 per litre, the rate of diesel was decreased twice in October and four times till today, which include price cuts of Rs 3.37 and 2.41, but Surprisingly, passenger vehicle operators have not reduced their fares. We were expecting cut in fares after price cut in diesel but it has not happened so far. No transporter would ever like to change the fare. It is the duty of Transport authorities, said Waseem, a transporter of Srinagar. According to transporters, the consecutive price cut in diesel had increased their income since August 2014 and there was every possibility of decreasing the fares to provide some kind of relief to commuters. Like oil Prices, the price of non-subsidized cooking gas (LPG) was cut by Rs 18.5 to Rs 865 per 14.2-kg cylinder and since August, this was the fourth reduction in rate of non-subsidized LPG which consumers buy after exhausting their quota of sub-market priced domestic cooking gas. Despite these cuts in price, there was no relief to people buying non subsidized LPG cylinders due to their alleged black marketing and official apathy. Pertinently despite assurances of Transport Commissioner, Dilshad Khan to resolve the matter, common masses continue to bear the brunt of official apathy.
