Despite sitting rock bottom of Group C in the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign and at the bottom quarter of the monthly FIFA Coco-Cola ranking, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) through its embassy in Banjul donated about D17 million (US$ 442,000) to the scorpions of The Gambia. The money according to the Daily Observer Newspaper is aimed at improving the performance of the Scorpions and enhancing their capability to victoriously compete in the ongoing and upcoming international football matches. Presenting the cheque to the minister for Presidential Affairs who also doubles as the secretary general & head of the Civil Service, Hon. Momodou Sabally, Ambassador Samuel Chen said that football is the most famous sport in The Gambia. He assured that Taiwan is willing to help to raise the standard and morale of the Scorpions based on the strong bilateral cooperation between Banjul and Taipei. The donation, he said, reflects Taiwan’s commitment to the development of Gambia’s sports sector. He further remarked that the Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh, has a great vision, and is determined to lift the Gambia national football team to the top of the world. Minister Sabally upon receiving the cheque expressed gratitude to the Taiwanese government through its Banjul embassy for the gesture. He assured that the money will be put to effective use. He stated that football is a major contributor towards the development of youths in general and national development at large. “It also promotes unity as everyone comes together to give the necessary support,” he added. Sabally also acknowledged that the money will help elevate the status of the Gambia national football team in the international arena.
