Despite some of the stupid things we do, people can be compassionate giving individuals who are willing to give of themselves and behave in humanitarian ways… except when they get behind the wheel of a car. Then it’s every man for himself. I’m willing to bet if Mother Theresa drove she might have found herself behind a line of cars in the left lane of a highway where the right lane is coming to an end, and if she was late for a humanitarian function she would have pulled into the right lane and tried to pass as many of the people in the left lane, who are doing exactly what they should be doing, as she could and wormed her way back into the left lane at the last minute, squeezing in front of a car who may very well have been on its way to the hospital with a pregnant passenger, but because the driver left more than five feet between him and the car in front allowed Mother Theresa to force her way in, making everyone behind her that much farther behind than moments before. Next time I’ll tell you about the time Albert Schweitzer stayed in the left lane on the freeway driving 66 mph, effectively blocking everyone else who wanted to pass the line of cars driving 64 mph in the right lane, simply because he didn’t want to get caught behind one of those people driving 2 mph less than him... and just liked driving in the left lane.
