Despite struggles, Chargers will keep calling runs by Kevin Patra The San Diego Chargers have struggled to run the ball, but that wont make them quit trying. Through three games the Chargers are averaging a pitiful 2.4 yards per carry average (worst in the NFL), but their 97 handoffs places them fifth in attempts. With both running backs Ryan Mathews (knee) and Danny Woodhead (broken fibula, out for the season) injured, the Chargers will rely on Donald Brown. Last week that reliance proved faulty. Brown had 31 rushes for 62 yards (2.0 yards per rush), becoming only the third player in NFL history to have more than 30 rushes in a game and average two-or-fewer yards per rush. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich, however, lives by the if at first you dont succeed try, try, try again motto. Certainly, our run game has been sub-par, Reich said, per U-T San Diego. But heres what I know: We have a lot of confidence in what were doing. We have a lot of confidence in the players we have doing it. Even last week, as bad as the run game was in the sense of averaging two yards a carry, were still getting runs called. Were going to keep calling them. Against a 32nd-ranked Jacksonville Jaguars defense on Sunday we expect Reich to call Browns name plenty. Rookie Branden Oliver and new addition Shaun Draughn should also see time in the rotation.
